What is a Relaxed performance and who is it for?
A relaxed performance is a show that’s been adapted to suit people who might require a more relaxed environment when going to the theatre. Common triggers are darkness, loud music, sudden noises and a generally unfamiliar environment in which you’re expected to sit still and quiet for a long time.
To make theatre more accessible, shows will put on a relaxed performance. Some technical changes will have been made to the performance – this can include quieter music, reducing loud or surprising sound effects and avoiding strobe lighting.
The atmosphere is exactly that – relaxed! The lights aren’t turned off and sometimes aren’t even dimmed. Theatres will often provide a ‘chill-out’ area for people to visit if the experience becomes overwhelming. Generally, people are allowed to enter and leave the auditorium freely, and there is an open attitude towards audience noise and movement.
Some theatres will also provide a social story of the theatregoing experience. Social stories are short and simple descriptions of an experience that explain what to expect in a situation and why, often with photos. These can reduce the stress of theatregoing and help people understand what is going to happen next.
A Relaxed Performance is meant to accessible for everyone, so anyone is welcome. However, the show has been adapted to fit specific needs. Mainly neurodiverse individuals, individuals with learning disabilities, and sensory or communication needs. It is also for families with young children or individuals who may need to move around during a performance.
How is EMT adjusting the show for their Relaxed Performance?
We have been very lucky to work with Capital Theatres, who are highly experienced in putting on Relaxed Performances, to put on this Relaxed Performance.
Before you arrive, we will have visual stories available. Visual stories are short and simple descriptions of what to expect during your trip to the theatre. It can help reduce anxiety and help you understand what happens in different situations.
Before the show we will welcome you on to the stage to see the set and meet some of the cast. This will give you the opportunity to feel the costumes and familiarise yourself with the costumes and faces. BOOK TOUCH TOUR HERE (only available for Matinee ticket holders).
Some of the cast will introduce the show, to emphasise that the story is fictional, and nobody is in any danger during the performance.
During the show the houselights will be dimmed, but it will not go fully dark. Certain lighting effects, such as strobe lighting, used in the show will be dimmed or taken out. Loud noises will be reduced and the general volume of the show will be lowered, but you’re of course very welcome to use ear defenders if that makes you feel more comfortable!
You are welcome to come in and out of the auditorium as needed. The bar area will be turned into a quiet space for you if you are feeling overwhelmed or overstimulated.
