EMT recently had the absolute pleasure of being invited to watch the world premiere of “Treason: The Musical” at the Festival Theatre. Treason brings the story of Guy Fawkes to life and follows Thomas and Martha (played by Sam Ferriday and Nicole Raquel Dennis), a newlywed couple facing the struggles of Catholics living in a Protestant dominated Britain. The betrayal of King James (played by Joe McFadden) leaves the Catholic community facing devastating loss and punishment, this is the turning point that leads Thomas to embarking on the journey to undertake the infamous treasonous act.
The level of musicality throughout the production was a standout to us. With music and lyrics from Ricky Allan, there was a variation of musical styles throughout the show ranging from stunning folk and pop songs to atmospheric ensemble numbers – there was even elements of rap from the extremely talented Gabriel Akamo playing Guy Fawkes.
The blend of complex harmonies and dynamic melodies and rhythms allowed for some breath-taking ensemble numbers that left us with goosebumps. Sam Ferriday and Nicola Raquel Dennis had several heart-breaking duets that captured the devastating ending of Thomas and Martha’s relationship – my personal favourite was “blind faith”.
Collectively, EMT were completely blown away with the choreography throughout the entire production. The ensemble’s constant on-stage presence added to the dynamic of the piece and really made it an engaging and immersive experience. Each movement sequence was executed in a way that was slick and precise, with each move being purposeful. The use of movement to move set and props was extremely impressive and it was clear a lot of time and work was put into the blocking and technical side of the show.
Overall, EMT are honoured to have been invited to watch the world premiere of such an incredible show. We really hope to see Treason gain the success that it deserves, hopefully we will see it’s return to Edinburgh in the future – another group trip will be in the cards for us.
